The gotcha: Therma-Tru changed their balance shoe design around 2008, and the old and new parts don’t interchange. If you’ve got a pre-2008 unit, you need the older spiral balance with the white nylon shoe, not the newer block-and-tackle setup. We pull the sash, read the stamp on the balance tube, and match it. For insulated glass, Therma-Tru uses several glass suppliers, so we measure the overall thickness with a caliper before ordering anything. You can check the easy stuff yourself: look for the manufacturer sticker on the top edge of the sash, measure the visible glass with a tape measure, and snap a photo of the balance tube when the sash is out. That helps us quote faster.

What you shouldn’t do: try to replace a balance spring without a sash removal tool. Those springs are under serious tension, and if that heavy Miami sash drops on a finger or a foot, you’re spending your afternoon at Jackson Memorial. Broken glass is the same story.
