Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Therma-Tru door installation in Miami typically runs $680 to $1,450 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing hardware, threshold assemblies, weatherstripping, or the full door slab. Most jobs are done the same day we arrive, because we stock the most common Therma-Tru replacement parts on the truck. The way most Miami homeowners discover a failing door is gradual: a door that suddenly needs a hip-check to close, a threshold that’s letting in the afternoon thunderstorm runoff, or a lock that no longer lines up with the strike plate no matter how many times you adjust it.
We’re Winslow Windows & Doors, an independent door and window contractor in Miami, not a Therma-Tru distributor or affiliate. What that means for you: we work on the door itself, not a brand script. Ed Winslow’s name is on the permit, and he’s spent over a decade installing and repairing Therma-Tru products across South Florida.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru builds a wide lineup, and the compatibility question is where most Miami homeowners get tripped up. The most common series we service are the Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, and Pulse lines. Each series uses different slab thicknesses, hinge prep locations, and threshold profiles, and parts are not universally interchangeable. A Smooth-Star doorslab won’t accept a Classic-Craft hinge set without re-machining, and no reputable installer should try.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that saves you time: the model name is stamped on the hinge edge of the door slab, not on the frame. If you have the original paperwork, the order number starts with the series code. If you don’t, we can identify the slab by measuring the thickness and checking the grain pattern. Fiber-Classic doors run 1-3/4 inches thick. Smooth-Star runs 1-3/4 as well, but has a smooth, paintable surface. Classic-Craft is the wood-grain line and is also 1-3/4 inches. The 1-3/8-inch slabs you find on some older Miami homes are almost always a cheap replacement door, not a Therma-Tru original.
For parts, we always recommend OEM Therma-Tru components over generic aftermarket copies. The OEM thresholds have the correct drain channels for Florida’s sideways rain, and the OEM weatherstripping is formulated to hold up to Miami’s UV and salt air. A generic threshold might fit, but it will puddle water under the door during the first solid afternoon storm.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing
- Water pooling at the interior threshold. In Miami, this almost always points to a failed or improperly pitched threshold cap. Therma-Tru’s adjustable thresholds work great until the drain channels clog with sand and leaf debris, then water has nowhere to go but inside. You’ll see it first on east-facing doors that catch the full brunt of afternoon storms.
- The door drags or binds at the top corner. Miami’s humidity swells wood subframes, but Therma-Tru’s fiberglass slabs don’t move much. A drag usually means the hinges have worn or the frame has settled. Continuing to force the door open wears the hinge knuckles faster and makes the eventual repair more expensive.
- You can see daylight around the door edge. Stand inside on a bright Miami afternoon and look at the perimeter. If light peeks through, your weatherstripping has compressed or torn. That gap is also where the cool air from your AC escapes, which you’ll notice on your next FPL bill.
- The lockset no longer catches. When a Therma-Tru door drops even 1/8 of an inch, the latch bolt misses the strike plate. Homeowners often blame the lock, replace the lock, and watch the same thing happen again. The actual problem is hinge wear or a shifted frame.
- The door won’t stay open or swings shut on its own. A properly installed exterior door should hold position when opened. One that swings shut means the jamb is out of plumb. It’s an installation issue, not a door issue, and it’s a sign the original install was rushed.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Miami for the most common Therma-Tru door repairs and replacements:
| Service | Typical Miami Price Range |
|---|---|
| Threshold replacement (OEM Therma-Tru adjustable) | $180 – $320 |
| Full weatherstripping set (jamb, sweep, top seal) | $120 – $240 |
| Hinge replacement and door realignment | $150 – $300 |
| Full slab replacement (same frame, new Therma-Tru slab) | $600 – $1,100 |
| Complete door system replacement (slab, frame, threshold, hardware) | $950 – $1,450+ |
The range comes down to slab series, size, and whether the frame is worth saving. A Classic-Craft slab costs more than a Smooth-Star, and unusual sizes like 3/0 x 8/0 cost more than standard 3/0 x 6/8. Every quote includes parts, labor, haul-away of the old door, and a written line-item breakdown before we start. The price you agree to is the price you pay. We honor that with the Done Right Promise: if our install isn’t done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely replace a door sweep yourself. You can clean out a clogged threshold drain channel with a wire brush. You can tighten hinge screws to see if that removes the sag. Those are ten-minute fixes, and we’re not going to charge you a trip fee to tell you that.
What you should not attempt is pulling and resetting a Therma-Tru slab on your own. A full fiberglass slab weighs 80 to 120 pounds, and if it slips out of your hands, you’re looking at a cracked slab, a broken toe, or both. Hinge mortising and threshold height adjustment require chisels, a router, and experience with how Miami’s humidity moves door frames across seasons. Getting a slab to seal tight against a threshold while clearing the tile floor is a half-day job for a trained technician and a weekend of frustration for everyone else. If you’re anywhere near the point of pulling the hinge pins, call (844) 901-4551 and let us handle it.
FAQs
A properly installed Therma-Tru door system in Miami will last 20 to 30 years, and the fiberglass slab itself will typically outlast the frame. What wears first in our climate is the weatherstripping, which takes a beating from the combination of intense UV, salt air, and daily humidity swings. Expect to replace weatherstripping every 3 to 5 years and the threshold every 8 to 12 years. Call (844) 901-4551 for a free inspection if your door is past the 10-year mark and showing signs of wear.
Yes. In Miami, the majority of Therma-Tru service calls we run are repairs, not replacements. Thresholds, weatherstripping, hinges, and locksets are all replaceable components, and a sagging door can usually be rehung without replacing the slab. Full slab replacement only makes sense when the fiberglass is cracked, the core is damaged, or the homeowner wants to change the style. We’ll always tell you which one actually saves you money before we recommend a course of action.
A threshold swap or weatherstripping replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes. A full slab replacement runs 2 to 3 hours. A complete system replacement, including frame and trim, is a 4 to 6 hour job. We bring the common parts on the truck, so most repairs are finished in a single visit. Call (844) 901-4551 and we’ll give you an honest time estimate over the phone.
We stock the most commonly needed Therma-Tru parts on our trucks: adjustable thresholds, weatherstripping kits, hinge sets, and sweep seals for Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, and Smooth-Star series. For less common items, like a specific Classic-Craft slab in a custom size, we order directly from Therma-Tru suppliers and typically have it within 3 to 5 business days. We also work on PGT, CGI, and CWS door products. Call (844) 901-4551 with your model number and we can tell you right away whether we have the part in a truck near you.
